Our Mission

The mission of The Whiskey Theatre Factory is to produce, develop, and celebrate emerging, untapped, and historically excluded voices. To accomplish our mission, we produce meaningful shows that provide opportunities for playwrights, directors, actors, designers, and technical theatre-makers in our community to grow.

Why ‘Whiskey?’

It’s one of those warm, cozy drinks that invites people to sit beside a fire and tell stories. Also it means our initials are ‘WTF’ - and we’re a little sassy, a little saucy, a little surprising. :D

What kinds of work do you produce?

To be honest, we’re only 2-ish years old, so the answer is still in process. Feel free to look through our ‘Event Archive’ and let us know if you can figure it out! :) We suspect it has something to do with queer stories, brand-new plays, explorations of gender, and feminism (we’re a female-led organization with a majority-female collective - and pretty excited about it!). There’s definitely some science fiction sprinkled in there, too.

We think it’s great when a play passes the DuVernay and/or Bechdel Tests but we’ve also done a play called “White Men Sit Around and Talk About the 1980s” so I guess it depends!

Okay, asking another way: are there any kinds of plays you won’t produce?

Nope! We’ve done plays set in living rooms and literally three plays set in space. We’ve done a play set in the 1880s and a play set in the way distant future. We’ve done plays with casts of 10+ and two-handers. We’ve done 5 minute plays and a play that was almost 3 hours, and we’ve loved it all.

As long as it’s in alignment with our values, we will consider any play.

What are your values?

  • We are here for ALL artists, period. That’s regardless of age, experience level, or whether or not someone’s art is ‘for a mainstream audience.’ We especially want to create a welcoming space for women, non-binary, LGBTQ+, neurodivergent artists, and artists of color,

  • We are passionate about the who, in addition to the what. We create art we love with people we love! Given our mission of being an incubator, we are especially interested in working with artists who consider themselves ‘in progress’ and are looking for opportunities to grow.

  • We love our audiences and patrons! But WTF is here primarily to develop artists. So we don’t stress if two people are in the audience and it’s the director and her mom. If we created meaningful art that enabled our artist community to grow, we did our job!

  • We LOVE new plays. It doesn’t mean we won’t ever license something that’s been done 100 times. But we haven’t yet!

  • We LOVE local playwrights. When we work with national playwrights we love bringing them to Orlando!

  • We LOVE plays that speak to relevant and contemporary issues. If it speaks directly to our community of Central Florida…wow. Even better!

  • We follow the Platinum Rule: treat others the way they would like to be treated. This includes being careful about what we produce and providing trigger warnings when appropriate.

  • We keep tickets as cheap as we can, with Pay What You Can options available whenever possible.

  • We genuinely believe in the power of theatre to change hearts and lives, and are idealistic to the core!

  • To be honest, this might seem like a random ‘value,’ but we have a LOT of fun :)

I’m in! How do I get involved?
